Work it Out: Is Exercise Responsible for Your Asthma?

While working out is enjoyable, revitalising and a general endorphin boost – it’s not always easy. Whether you’re into cardio, weight-training or both, you’ve more than likely experienced shortness of breath at one point or another.

Perhaps you didn’t warm up properly, or maybe you’re just new to the gym scene. However, there is another reason why you might be struggling for breath when you work out.Exercise-induced bronchospasm (EIB) is the official term for the asthma-like symptoms people experience when they exercise, which can show themselves as wheezing, panting or coughing.

In an interview with Everyday Health, allergist and professor Dr. Alan Gold sobel explained the effect it can have upon people. “Exercise usually only causes symptoms during and shortly after exercise," he explained. "If children have EI Band poorly controlled asthma from a young age, they grow up thinking that a tight chest, coughing, or wheezing with exercise is the norm," he continued. He then explained how this can also unconsciously deter them from exercising in future.

Below, we list the asthma signals that might be flagged when you’re working out. If you’ve noticed that you suffer from any of them, we strongly advise you to seek advice from a medical professional.

 ·        Coughing while walking, running or working out

·        Wheezing once you’ve finished exercising

·        Experiencing shortness of breath during and after your workout

·        Feeling nauseated during or after a workout

Proper management of this condition, regular check-ups with your doctor and the correct medication will ensure that EIB won’t stop you from living an active lifestyle.
